To fund research on vaccine production
The European Union announced today, Friday, that the State of Kuwait has donated 100 million US dollars to international efforts to finance research on vaccine production and the development of means to combat the virus (Corona Novel – Covid 19).
This came according to a list published by the European Union today that includes the countries and the amounts pledged at the International Conference to respond to the virus (Corona) , which was held on May 4 and hosted by the European Commission.
The commission said in a statement that the international conference to respond to the virus (Corona) has so far collected 8.9 billion euros (10.8 billion US dollars), an increase of 2.3 billion euros (2.5 billion dollars) than expected.
They noted that “the outcome of the conference shows the desire and ability of the world to unite forces and pool resources to overcome the epidemic.”
For his part, the Ambassador of the State of Kuwait in Belgium and head of its missions to the European Union and NATO (NATO) Jassem Al-Bedawi, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) today the importance of Kuwait’s participation in this global event.
He said that the participation of Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Nasser Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah in the conference, representing His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, is in line with “the framework of constructive interaction that the State of Kuwait attaches to its cooperation with the international community, especially in combating the Corona pandemic.”
He pointed out that the State of Kuwait donated at this conference organized by the European Union on the 4th of last May in the amount of 40 million US dollars in addition to its previous donation of 60 million US dollars.
Ambassador Al-Bedawi stressed that the role of the State of Kuwait in this global framework will not end and that international coordination and cooperation with the international community will continue until the epidemic is eliminated.
He pointed out that the State of Kuwait will continue to share its experiences with the virus with other countries in order to benefit mutually in combating it.
He stated that the State of Kuwait donated $ 100 million to fight the spread of the virus, which has three goals: to discover a vaccine, find a cure for the virus, and further develop the diagnostic ability.
In this context, Ambassador Al-Bedawi stressed the importance of diplomacy in increasing solidarity between the international community and uniting efforts to confront common threats facing the world.
“I would like to announce the State of Kuwait’s donation of $ 40 million, as part of its efforts to support this conference and future international endeavors to stop the spread of the virus,” Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah said in his intervention at the International Conference on Response to (Corona) Virus via the Internet.
He added, “With this amount, the total donations made by the State of Kuwait to support international efforts in this battle will be $ 100 million.”
The event was co-organized by the European Union, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Saudi Arabia, which also holds the presidency of the Group of Twenty, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom.
In a related context, the pledge marathon that started on May 4 will witness the launch of a new campaign with the organization (Global Citizen) under the title “Global Goal: Uniting for the Future” which will culminate in the global pledge summit on June 27.
