Moderna said yesterday that experiments on a vaccine for Covid-19 led to a strong immune response and provided protection from infection in the Corona virus in studies of monkeys.
The company said in a press release that the vaccine Myrna-1273, which was given to monkeys, provided protection to the lung and nose from infection and prevented lung disease in all animals.
The results of the monkey study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
These results appear to show an improvement over the results achieved by the AstraZeneca vaccine in a similar study.
As the study increased confidence in the vaccine, Moderna said it had already begun human testing.
On Monday, the company began a late phase of the study, targeting health volunteer testing. The positive results of these trials may open the way for regulatory approval and widespread use of the vaccine no later than the end of the year.
